Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths

  • Prohibits the keeping of egg-layins hens in cages.
  • Requires that hens have access to nesting, scratching and perching areas.
  • Prohibits the sale of all eggs originating from egg-laying hens that have not been raised following equivalent standards set in the legislation.

Weaknesses

  • Applies only to egg-laying hens and does not cover other animals. Does not include quail hens.
  • Will enter into force on January 1, 2024.
  • The law still allows the minimal space allowance per animals in some cases, for instance for testing or in farms holding less than 3,000 egg laying hens.
