Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths

  • Recommends eliminating the use of medically important antimicrobials for growth promotion and feed efficiency purposes.
  • Recommends that all medically important antimicrobials used in feed or water should require a VFD (Veterinary Feed Directive) or a prescription.

Weaknesses

  • These recommendations are not binding and as such, have never been codified into law. As a result, the regulations pertaining to antimicrobials use in the US have never been updated to reflect this guidance document.
  • Only covers medically important antimicrobials.
  • The recommendation that animal pharmaceutical companies should remove growth-promotion claims from medically important antimicrobial drugs in food-producing animals may result in the drugs simply being re-labelled with new "disease-prevention" labels but still be used in the same way.
