Strengths & Weaknesses
Strengths
- Establishes limitations on the quantity of fish killed, by setting maximum sustainable yields at regional levels, as well as fleet capacity ceilings.
- Implements measures to reduce by-catch, such as through the prohibition of certain equipment.
- Requires reporting and monitoring measures are put in place in the Member States to monitor the amount of fish.
Weaknesses
- Does not cover all aquatic animals, only fish.
- Subsidises fishing.
- Does not include conditionality mechanisms with animal welfare rules.
- Suffers from major enforcement issues.
